The United Nations’ Security Council

The Question of Reform

More than half a century behind its foundation the United Nations has been suffering several demands for the restructuring of the Security Council, since the present Permanent Membership, made up of Britain, China, France, Russia and the United States is seen as an historical misdate and a mere ‘shopwindow’ of the victorious powers of the Second World War, no longer reflecting today’s international order and the United Nations as an institution. Considering the various voices for the reform of the Security Council, several authors have numbered possible ways in which the Council might be reformed. These possible changes will be deeply analyzed in this essay, always taking into account today’s international order and in which ways this order can influence the outcome of such complex metamorphosis.
