An Exploration of Knowledge Management and Total Quality Management


With increasing competition in business markets, organizational knowledge becomes a major source of competitive advantage. Although Knowledge Management (KM) has promised to provide significant benefits, studies have shown that many are failing to exploit it. One of the main reasons is that people have no clear understanding of KM and knowledge. Therefore, the purposes of this paper are (i) to gain a clear understanding of KM and (ii) to explore the relationship between knowledge management (KM) and total quality management (TQM). This paper discusses the importance of knowledge management in organizations and hence reveals why KM can increase the competitive advantage of a business. In addition, a TQM model, i.e. the European Foundation for Quality Management (EFQM) business excellence model, is selected for illustration and the relationship between KM and TQM discussed.
