Social Acculturation in Macao: Non-local Employees in Gaming Organisations


Macao has evolved from being a migrant community of Chinese and Portuguese settlers, to the present cosmopolitan gaming enclave at the southeastern tip of China. This evolution is parallel to the development of the gaming industry that has put tiny Macao on the world map. This article examines the socializing role of gaming in attracting foreign workers and professionals to Macao and argues that they are assimilated into Macao society to varying degrees depending on their motivations, and on the barriers against social acculturation.
