Himself a Mandarin: Austin Coates and Macao

Macao has been a recurrent topos in English Literature as a historical contact zone and cultural frontier depicted in literary works such as Austin Coates’ City of Broken Promises (1967), the first English (historical) novel in which Macao is the main location of the action. This paper aims to study Coates’ long relationship with both the history and the people of the City of the Holy Name of God, namely Jack M. Braga and other Macanese historians, with whom he learned about the city’s past, and also his relation with and life in Portugal.
