Privatization and Deregulation of the Seaport Industry: Economic Analysis and Policy Choice

 

Abstract:
As an important part of the infrastructure of the national economy, in the past seaport services were mainly supplied by the public sector, accompanied by strict regulation. However, given the trend of liberalization, and in view of changes in the economic and technical features of the industry, these services came to be provided by both the public and private sectors. Since the 1980s, many countries have introduced institutional reforms including privatization and deregulation in an effort to improve efficiency and relieve the financial burden upon government. In practice, seaports have delivered good economic performance worldwide.
